Assessment and management of obesity in adolescents.

Multidisciplinary input to support adolescents and their families with weight loss. Dietary advice, lifestyle choices eg exercise, psychiatric assessment and some candidates will be considered for bariatric surgery (laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding).
This is a multidisciplinary clinic (Paediatricians – Dr Bronwyn Fitzgerald, Dieticians – Julie Stabb, Paediatric Surgeon – Mr Niall Jones, Psychiatrist – Dr Fiona Wagg, Nurse – Mr Alex Batt) for adolescents (12 to 18 years of age) with significant obesity, based on The Department of Health Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Overweight and Obesity in Adults, Adolescents and Children in Australia.
The clinic is held four times a year at the RHH Paediatric Outpatients Department, but candidates can be seen in alternative clinics (mostly Paediatric Surgery clinics) during the year as well.
A referral (preferably faxed) is required for all new appointments and must conform to the Referral Standards as outlined on For Clinicians.
GP referral with all relevant information eg age, gender, height (m), weight (kg), BMI (kg/m2), past medical, social and psychiatric history, family history, obesity-related co-morbidities eg Type II diabetes, sleep apnea, joint pain, results of metabolic profiles.
