All referrals should comply to referral standards and also include:
- History of making diagnosis as is often asymptomatic
- History of thirst, polyuria, renal colic, anorexia, constipation, nausea or vomiting
- History of fatigue or confusion
- History of usual causes – primary hyperparathyroidism, other malignancies including myeloma, sarcoidosis
- Serum total calcium, albumin and ionised calcium
- U&E Cr, Phosphate, Mg2+
- Parathyroid hormone paired with Ca2+
- Bone densitometry

Red flags are clinical indicators of possible serious underlying conditions requiring further medical intervention. They may or may not indicate an emergency.

Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review.
