Pre-referral work-up
History
Accept referrals from GP's in relation to existing patients requiring assistance. However start-up referrals only accepted from Paediatricians or Clinical Nurse Consultant Gastrostomy Care.
All referrals should comply to referral standards and include in particular:
- Medical history and symptoms
- Known food allergies and intolerances
- Three day diet history
- Weight history
Tests
- Results of any tests appropriate for the referral type are helpful – such as allergy testing, gut function, bowel issues, renal dysfunction, general biochemistry etc

Emergency
THS Southern Region: Please contact CNC Gastrostomy Care through RHH switch BEFORE going to Emergency Department (if within business hours). If not, proceed to Emergency Department (ED).
Urgent / category 1
Patient
has not eaten for three days or longer.
Semi-urgent / category 2
Unintentional loss of weight – more than 10% body mass.
Insufficient weight gain/poor growth in children.
Routine / category 3
Chronic conditions
Red flags are clinical indicators of possible serious underlying conditions requiring further medical intervention. They may or may not indicate an emergency.
